Shell Shock upgrade

Post by Dutchrai »

Shell Shock will be undergoing an upgrade tonight, meaning it might be down for 30 minutes or so. Not many of the changes will be visible, it's more a 'behind the scenes' thingy.

Visual changes:
- graphically a few enhancements here and there in images, layout and colors
- a "goto" combo-box added to the bottom of each page
- formmail implemented (go to contacts to send an email)

What follows next is the major change, probably more of interest to webdesigners. In other words, if you think that html, xhtml and css are delicious cookies...don't read on

Technical changes:
- completely moved from "xhtml-transitional" to "xhtml-strict"
- completely W3C "xhtml-strict" and "css" compliant (you can check this by clicking the xhtml and css buttons at the bottom of each page)

Moving to xhtml-strict wasn't without problems, but I think it's running properly now. Tested under Mozilla Firefox 1, IE6, and Opera 7.54.

Since the new site has total (and I mean total) seperation between content and layout, very old browsers that do not support CSS (IE4, NS4 etc) will not display properly.
I ditched the use of the 'table' tag for layout purposes, since that is not their intended use. Used CSS positioning instead. The 'table' tag is now used only for displaying tables. It just makes more sense.

Wow... you completely ditched tables? That's what I use for layouts and everything :) . Like to learn CSS positioning in the future though.

Yup, all gone. If you want to know how, just have a look at the CSS files (there are three) and one of the smaller html files. It's really not too bad once you get it to work
(although IE is a bastard when it comes to W3C compliancy, one big bug really)

Yay.. hopefully you'll be upgrading the hard drive and memory too! Maybe even upgrade the bandwidth so we can view the pages a little faster.. I mean it's fast now but just imagine after the upgrade.. Excellent! ;)

Nice work on the site.. you've gotten lots of compliments in the channel.
Cheers!

Ok JeffM

Dutchri on your site scrolling up and down isn't smooth. I don't know why, every other site I've been to, scrolling is fine. But yours, the scrolling just isn't smooth. does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Smooth for me :-) But, I would be very interested to know what browser / OS / hardware you are running. However, I suspect that your browser isn't to great in handling CSS stuff. Your browser name and version? Using Firefox myself, but tested on IE and Opera.

I have the Mozilla browser (from Mozilla appiclations suite), running Win XP and my processor is 1.8 GHZ P 4. Your site is the ONLY one that I have trouble scrolling on. Maybe you could give me another CSS site to test my browser on? Anyone else with Mozilla experencing this?

Strange. I suspect a bug in your current browser, relating to some slow calculations done on CSS float positioning. There have been some issues with this in the past with Mozilla.
To verify this, would you mind trying the latest Mozilla Firefox browser? I'm not suggesting this as a solition, but merely to drill down to the problem. Am curious. I use this browser and it's fine. So are Opera and IE.

The main Shell Shock stuff is the same, biggest change was the switch from Table to CSS positioning. There are not many sites that have made this switch yet, so that is why you probably only get it on my site. Other sites that use it? Let me see...

http://www.molly.com/

Try that. A website of a web consultant using a similar method for webdesign as mine, being CSS float.

That website (www.molly.com) is fine. My Mozilla version number is Mozilla 1.7. Seems its your site. Is there any way to take 'Screenshot videos' that makes a video of what's on your screen? I could show the world that way.

Mmm...I really don't get it. All sites but mine. Scrolling not smooth. Did you try Mozilla Firefox? Still need to know if there's a bug in your current browser. Doing some research on this in the mean time.

Just installed Mozilla 1.7.5, smooth as silk. Maybe it's some funny combination of browser / OS / videocard...one of those elusive bugs that always slips the net.

In any case, I can't figure out the reason for the problem you're seeing. There is some mention on the net for 'slow down' bugs on Mozilla 1.7.3 relating to CSS, but otherwise, nothing much.

Lol..yes I agree, use it all the time, my favorite browser.

But when I mentioned Mozilla in my last post, I refered to Mozilla 1.7.5, which is just 'Mozilla'. 'Mozilla Firefox' is on version 1.0.

Hmmm... I tried it with IE (had to blow the cobwebs off of it first) and your site is fine. It's my Mozilla thing.
