Keys blocking eachother.

Post by asciimonster »

I have a problem with my Suse 10.1 box. It comes with BZFlag 2.0.4.20060502-Stable. Now I have this very strange combination of keys:
- If I press up and left, I can't shoot.
- If I press up and shoot(space), I can't turn left.
All other three key combinations work, allthough I suspect that forward+jump+shoot also doesn't work.

Is this specific to this version, or is it the problem in my box?

I've tried to upgrade to 2.0.8, but I'm only hitting a lot of missing dependencies. I'm usually not dicouraged by this, but this quagmire prooved a bit too large for me.

I presume when you talked about upgrading to 2.08, you were talking about compiling it yourself. If you head over to to rpm search (http://rpm.pbone.net/) and search for Bzflag, the 2.08 rpm is there, listed under "suse other", though this has a slight defect, you can't shoot with the wheel of the mouse. I compiled mine myself because of this. Also be aware of the F12 key, this lauches kerry beagle underneath Bzflag and none of your keys will work, I searched for kerry+beagle in yast and uninstalled it.

I got the rpm. Started to install it. Yast though a moment about it and decided to reinstall the 2.0.4 version, no reasons given.

That's why I rarely use rpms. They come directly from the twilight zone.

asciimonster: just use smart to get the dependencies (make sure to get the -devel packages, as well), and it will compile just fine on SuSE.

Install it with the konsole, as root "rpm -Uvh filename.rpm"

Ok. That worked. Instaled 2.0.8.

Result: Still the same: I can't shoot while pressing left+forward.
So this is not a version problem, but something in my linux box. :?

P.S. To clarify: This is only when I play with the keyboard (my control of choice, since I started off with x86 games; I never gotten the hang of game mouses and joysticks). So when using the mouse I have no problems.

This is a problem with your keyboard and/or keyboard controller.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_jamming or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_keyboard#Games for a brief overview.

Electrical details for the root problem can be found at http://www.dribin.org/dave/keyboard/html/ghosting.html if you are so inclined.

Solution: buy a better keyboard.
