Great hosting solution... (100GB bandwidth enough?)

I just found a great hosting solution.

4GB room, 100GB bandwidth, shell access, FTP access, PHP, MySQL, and I think server includes....

for only $6.95 a month.

http://www.bluehost.com

I'm about to talk to my parents then I'll get the official iBZEdit server up.
(you know... a server that host's all the level's made with iBZEdit)

I've e-mailed them and have found that as long as the program or network tracker (PHP) doesn't need root access then there fine with it.

I asked about running bzfs and they said it was o.k.

And they were extremly quick about it.

(checking link, and facts now)

*edit*
http://www.bluehost.com/tell_me_more.html

And they also have SSL....

I'm defenatly going to switch...

Note: you must pay for at least 24 days for free settup and free domain registrations.

That equals $166.8

And you must pay by credit card.
(MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover)

This will be good enough for a part-time server at best. To run it full-time, you'll need to run one of those Ducati-type servers 4 vs. 4. I'm basing this on my experience using Server Pronto. I had 200GB of bandwidth and I actually overdid it the first month :(. Good luck though. :)

Whoa... 200GB.....

Could somebody give me a reference to see how much bandwidth is used everyday... with about 10 people?

More than you'd expect. I don't know the exact amount. Even though bzflag clients do their own calculations, making bzfs a pretty non-intensive process, they forward data to each other not directly but through the server.

Looking at http://bzflag.bz/tmp/secretplace_perplayer.png

Minimum (stat. sgn.):
3 KB/player-second for 10 players = 30KB/s
* 3600 seconds/hour = 108MB/hr
* 24 hours/day = 2.59GB/day
* 30 days/mo = 77.75GB/mo

On the curve:
6 KB/player-second for 10 players = 60KB/s
* 3600 seconds/hour = 216MB/hr
* 24 hours/day = 5.18GB/day
* 30 days/mo = 155.5GB/mo

Maximum (stat. sgn.):
10 KB/player-second for 10 players = 100KB/s
* 3600 seconds/hour = 360MB/hr
* 24 hours/day = 8.64GB/day
* 30 days/mo = 259.2GB/mo

There are lots of factors that affect bandwidth usage, including things you can control (many jumps on wings will result in people holding down tab, which generates large volumes of player updates, for instance) and things you can't (how active your players are, for instance).

If you are planning to host 10 players be sure you can eat at least 200GB or more of monthly bandwidth usage. If you are planning to host more, remember that it's a slightly parabolic curve. 20 players will use about 8KB/player instead of 6KB/player, so you'd be looking at closer to 600GB/mo rather than 400GB/mo. Likewise reducing playercount reduces bandwidth rather more than you think it would, since 5 players will use only about 4.5KB/player average.

3 KB / player*second minimum? How does this compare with other games?

From a couple of ISP's:
Playing online, interactive multiplayer games (such as as Counter-Strike, Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament etc) can attract an average data transfer of between 10 - 60 Mb per hour.
(http://www.ptme.com/it/isp/broadband/in ... viours.htm)

That's client side usage. 10-60MB/player-hour is about 2.8-16.6 KB/player-second.
Online multiplayer games - as long as you aren't the server you should be fine, these games generally use a solid 3-5KB/sec when connecting to a remote server.
(http://www.august.net/howmuch.php)

Again, client-side usage. 3-5 KB/player-second.
Generally, each [Counterstrike] player uses 40 Kbps of bandwidth
(http://www.isp-planet.com/technology/2002/ipx_bol.html)

40Kbps/8bits/byte = 5 KB/player-second.
Hello, I noticed that the average person uses anywhere between 3k-5k for in and 3k-5k for out when playing counter-strike. With that being said I'll round up and use the worst case scenerio of each player using a total of 11k/s per player...For Twelve Players...342.14 GB/month
(http://www.webhostingtalk.com/archive/t ... 091-1.html)

Once again we see 3-5 KB/player-second typically with 11 KB/player-second worst-case.

Later on the same page a correction states:
Normal CS server usage is about 4 KBps (thats on the high side), and max is 8 KBps (Default maxrate I believe) [per slot]... 197.75...gb / month
So here we see 4KB/player-second average and 8KB/player-second max.

I dunno how accurate any of those sources are.

De-serving

DTRemenak, those comments should be combined and turned into a sticky. In my experience, it's very difficult to find reliable information about bandwidth usage and lag. The links are greatly appreciated, along with the graph.

There's not much I can do about bandwidth usage and lag, but that info is good to have.

Ok, cool.

I want to host a practice (private) server for my league team.

And a public server that rotates.
(so there's the map's that are uploaded...)

On the public server I'm gona mod the server so that when the server recieves a MsgKilled I just ignores it.
(that way nobody can die and people can check the map out)

Probably a three shot server.
(four jumps on wings)

And the private server will be blocked....
(so only my team can play on it... because I might make it global)

Beleive me, anything that cheap is not worth being a game-host. (they most likely won't appreciate a game-server and you might go over 150GB and get huge fees)

"Quality over quantity."

If you're anal about having a lag free game, here's a deal:
http://www.stayhosted.com wrote:Dedicated Servers
Up to 1,000GB Bandwidth
Starting as low as $ 99.95

30mbps downstream/5mbps upstream

Just learned about this a couple days ago!!! :D

Verizon is putting this speed through fiber optics!!! So Cool! Called Verizon Fios. Although it costs $200 dollars a month :evil: it has a 5mbps upsteam and is not available everywhere at the time being. So what does that configure to? Hmmm... 4kbps a player 5mbps... roughly 1,250 people.

You could run a server-rental system, where people "rent" a server on your comptuer for a certain amount of time. That way you could be compensated for the bandwith cost, and still run your own server!

What?

Are you kidding me i can have a hosting server? Well doesn't matter anyway I don't have $200 a month :( even if i did it's not available in my area :evil: . But there are othe pricing plans like 15mbps downstream and still 5mbps upstream for 40 bucks :wink: .

I feel like...

I feel like that comcast is overpriced they just came out with Comcast 2. Having a 8mbps upstream (2mbps more) and a pretty good upstream of 768kbps. Now this is stupid $40[/u] :evil:

That's pretty good for $40. I'd get it if you want to run a server. Or if you want to have a decent connection.

Not really

I run on rogers cable and they have a 800kilobyte uplink and a 7meagbit downlink the only downside is how they have a 60 gig bandwidth limit :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil:

That Good

That's pretty good. How much is it? Because if it's 40 bucks or less i might think about it. :lol-old:

you can't host a map on 60gig a month you need at least 100gig. Probably 200 preferebly

Oh

really you can't do it on 60 gig. But it's not like you are going to host it on them right? :|
