Hepcat Closed Permanently

The hepcat.org bzflag servers are down for good. I ask that other operators do not use the word hepcat in their server dns/description which is confusing. The maps are freely available for others to host.

I have asked Jeff to remove the hepcat global groups/perms as well.

Thanks to all of the hepcat admins and cops who were great and a giant help.

I will likely not read these forums going forward. Good luck to all.

Wow, is there a reason why that you'd like to share?

I am shocked. It was a very successful and popular server that drew few valid complaints. I must respect Cosmos' decision, though it is shocking and dissapointing. :?

I'm hosting Babel's Grassroots right now.

I volunteer to host Overlord in my rotation. Better than nothing... Rotation starts when people get tired of my Battlefield: Chaos map.

Now that is really sad news.... I need a real fast connection

probably just from all the crap he had to go thru to run the server. A number of bzflag players seem to be asshats, he's had threats, complaints, and stuff you'd not even belive. And very few people realising that he ran it just for the fun of it.

I didn't frequent hepcat, but this comes as shocking news to me. The absence of this server leaves a void that will be hard to fill, especially for those that don't like "spray n' pray" style servers. :?

Jeff is right, cosomos once told me on IRC what trouble he was having...
I swear, it made me ashamed to play bzflag, that people were so rude, insulting, aggressive, threatening...
And on top of all that, he was doing it for fun, for OUR enjoyment, and we were the ones giving him so much trouble... It's not cheap, all that bandwidth.

 It's so sad...

Hepcat will live on in our hearts. Memories of happy tank-blasting times.

Most of the bzflag community have been absolutely ammazing, and freindly, and kind. It's just those few that have to go and spoil it all. Those people have let us all down.

i can't say i wasn't expecting this. many players' favorite server is gone and the reasons are obvious.. for me hepcat was like a coffee house or club where you got to meet friends and see familiar faces. first pillbox then overlord became my favorite maps to play on, but when i think about it, often the game itself was an excuse when i needed a good laugh and get rid of the bad mood.. it was my privilege to be a part of the cop/admin staff over the last months. i tried to be as fair as possible but if i have done injustice to anyone please accept my apologies now.. no more to say except THANK YOU to cosmos for all the fun time he has given us.

How long was it until it came back again the first time it shut down?

I don't know.

I don't see cosmos starting it up again. I'd just move on to other servers.

Same here. It was a lot of fun to patrol that server.

I do remember that there were a lot of white supremists that wrote bad /report's. There was once a Democrat that came on and wrote anti-Republican stuff. It is sad that people take out politics on computer games than to their government, where it actually is effective. Even if they are in a country that doesn't observe free speech in regards to government, taking it out on a computer game is still ineffective.

ooo this isnt gunna be fun. unless a meteorite finally is able to host 24/7. then it will rool. cause then id be a cop :). but hepcat is where i got my high score, and my low score. and where i became a noob, then a pro. i will miss it dearly. thank you cosmos for being so kind and giving so much to the bzflag community. farewell hepcat! hello meteorite!

If you're still reading this cosmos, I'd like to thank you for keeping the server up as long as you did. I remember the hepcat pillbox server as one of the first maps I played on, along with grassroots... And now they're both gone.

Ditto. I couldn't have said it better!
Atleast the hepcat.tybox servers are still up (as far as I know...) and one of them is hosting the pillbox map.

grassroots was being hosted by tropican8, on his server, 0-topican-0.no-ip.org:4200, but i believe he is currently rotating maps between that, The great wall, by 1bad, and 1bads first map

Now hosting Overlord. Available at bzflag.bounceme.net:5154 I will be hosting 24/7 in the future. When I can get multiple servers running it will be this and a rotation.
