ok.
use wings for the hard bits and text edit for the easy bits. when you save the map use the bzw extension and when it prompts you weather you want to use it click "Use .bzw" on newer versions or "Don't Append" on older versions.
oh and if you Get Info on a bzw file in the finder and select the "Open With", and choose "TextEdit", then hit "Change All..." any files with the extesion .bzw will open in TextEdit thereafter.

if you take ^nightmare^'s advice i will peronally hit you over the head with a large 2x4 (But let's not start up the old Operating System debate)^nightmare^'s suggestion, forget the mac and get win2000! Then use bzedit

1) there is no native bzedit for OSX
2) you can use 3d modelers like wings or blender to make objects and then convert/export them
3) you then have to edit the map in a text file for things the modelers can't do ( teleporters, world weapons, etc... ) map files are just text.
If you don't know how to open a file in a text editor in your "advanced" OS then I sugest you learn how to use it. ( hint, check the file menu, has lots of nice things in it ).

Sharpshooter, you pretty much have to code in TextEdit.
You can use a 3dModeller like Wings3D and Blender (both free), but I would reccomend only using those for complex meshes which aren't specific bzflag objects.
Read up on these:
