What changed binary size in 2.4?

I noticed that now Bzflag (2.4) is a fraction of the size of Bzflag (2.0.16), 37mb vs 178mb. Why is this?

the mac version no longer has debug symbols and is on par with the other platforms. BZFlag is not a big game
