Help with Server

Post by Crallion »

I am trying to run a server (actually, I have mostly succeeded)

Anyway, I do everything right with the:
-public
-publicaddr
-p
and even,
-publiclist http://my.BZFlag.org:81/db/

But still, the title (or whatever you call it) doesn't show up on the server list. I can access my map from the server list, but it doesn't have a name. Does anyone have any ideas on what is wrong?

Do you have your firewall disabled and, if you have it, a router with the necessary ports unblocked?

Well obviously you don't... post your entire option section (minus any password) and we will tell you exactly what you did wrong.

Are you using your internal (router IP) or the IP your ISP gave you (External)

Why so secretive?? Post your actual config because this looks good. If you want help we don't talk in supposition. Show us EXACTLY what you are doing and we will tell you EXACTLY what you are doing wrong. Otherwise, don't waste our time.

If you put up this server, everybody will know your IP. Besides, your IP is public information, not something to be secretive about. Any internet server you contact has a copy of your IP address, and can do what they want with it. Hell, if you send me an email, that email comes with your IP, plus the IP of every server it went through on the way.

Post us a copy of your conf, all you need to blank out for security is the password. It's not a case of "What's the difference?". Being open and ready to accept help is paramount to receiving it. And that holds true for pretty much all situations in life.

Listen to yourself. You just said "what is the difference? I posted it exactly how it is, except different."

If you want someone to help you, please do what they ask of you, and don't yell at them. Spazzy didn't ask anything unreasonable, and was trying to help.

This type of behavior won't earn you a positive reputation, or, funnily enough, help.

Hmmm, the first problem is that it still doesn't show up. :(

The next problem is that it still says the IP I had originally on the server list. Not my "external" IP.

Did you quit the server?
Did you take out your router's IP and replace it with your external one you got in the -publicaddr?

Does your ISP use a proxy? If not get rid of this line -publiclist http://my.BZFlag.org:81/db/, it's not needed. Also, do you have a firewall running on your machine the could be blocking the connection? To test this you could try connecting to the server on your local address (192.168.0.196:5154) while the server is running.

As for the showing us the actual config, thank you. See at least one of the issues had to do with the ACTUAL ip address you were specifying.

Well something is blocking it...
Have you forwarded the proper ports in your router?

So we find the probable root of the problem. I am assuming that you have a router or some device between the internet and you home PC, given your internal IP address. You need to open a port on your firewall to forward all traffic to the port you bflag map is using from the external IP to your internal IP. Look here www.portforward.com

PS. Opening a port on your firewall can be a security risk. Understand what you are doing before you do it.
