I get an Error uploading an avatar from URL.

Try saving the file to your desktop and then using "Upload Avatar from your machine".
Edit: Actually, that line of code seems to be in the area that checks the file type. Make sure you are using a GIF, JPEG (.jpg), or PNG file. No other types are supported.
