Problems with bzflag on Ubuntu 8.07

I have some problems with bzflag when I run it on Ubuntu 8.07. The problem is a poor display with blinking and every few mins the client minimizes or the desktop pops up. The problem is related to Ubuntu latest version using fancy desktop effects (compiz/fusion) by default. These are nice visual effects for the desktop like 3D (cube) desktop, wobbly windows, etc.

Bzflag does just perfect if I switch the desktop effects off, but I wonder if anyone here knows a fix to be able to play without having to turn the fancy effects off.

The problem is not likely to be related to a particular graphics card (ATI and Nvidia alike) because I observed the same in my 3 different computers each with different graphics.
