Thanks to the work of AlexanderLAW and the BZFlag and FTGL teams, BZFlag trunk is now (as of r17243) fully unicode-enabled:
Those of you who use or would like to use languages with characters outside the ascii character set included with previous versions of BZFlag may now update your translations to include them. Please be sure to save the .po files in UTF-8 format.
Multibyte language support
Please note that this is in trunk. For those who don't speak "development" or "SVN" that means that it is in BZFlag 3.0 (and not in 2.0.x), and will be released when BZFlag 3.0 comes out. If you would like to help out with testing of BZFlag 3.0, feel free to download the trunk, compile it, test it and report any errors on SourceForge.

It does now compile (revision 17263). There are currently no public servers online using that protocol, so prepare to run your own one if you want to play around a bit.
From a quick look all chars are displayed like they should but once you join a server you will notice nothing happens when you type some non-ASCII input.

There should be a server up tomorrow. The test server on norang (bzflag3.norang.ca:10000) builds the latest server version automatically every night.
