First off you should download BZEdit. Get it here:

You can use this to make totally new maps or even modify existing maps made by other people (although some map makers don't like that...)bad miker wrote:Cool, got it, running it; it looks like a map editor. Do I need this to just change between different (downloaded) maps?
You don't need this just for maps. Map files are just simple text. If you don't mind learning the language of it you can edit maps in a text editor like NotePad. (but I would use BZEdit for the time being)

you start the server from the command line with -world YOUR\MAP\FILE\NAME\AND\PATH.bzw
you do NOT use the in game start server option for this.
There are many threads on how to start a server.
you can follow the instructions for a plublic server, just ignore all the stuff about -public, and seting up your router, if all you want to do is see it localy
there is a thread on it here,

After browsing through this forum, I've used various of the hints and tips for making maps, making servers, etc, but I've run into the same wall bad miker's run in to. I'll list everything I did in detail.no one else can join: just get the "press RM or i" sign, but neither works. Normal map works fine, so is this something in the config file?
I make my level, and write a config file (attached). I go into the command prompt, get to the directory where BZFlag is installed, and I type this in:
Code: Select all
bzfs -conf myconfig.txt
Any suggestions? I'm running BZFlag 2.0.2, Windows XP, and BZEdit 1.6.5.

I found all this really useful, but i still can't get a map to load. I open up the command prompt and enter the nesessary stuff. then when it comes to load
bzfs -conf myconfig.txt
here, it loads the server unless i have the "myconfig.txt" load a map:
-world "SOME_MAP_FILE"
where "some_map_file" is the directory for the map. i didn't know where to put it so I put it in the beginning, middle and end and neither worked.
anyway. my error message was:
Unknown BZDB variable: _drawCelestial
I assume this means I have to define"_drawCelestial" but I don't know how.
thanks.

i solved the problem.
i just had to redownload the map.
-for key705:
if your running your server in command prompt it will say:
"Queuing ADD message to list server"
If it doesn't show this, then there's something wrong with the server or map...
if it shows this then it's usually safe to enter the map.
I'm not quite sure if it's the server's way of telling that it's ready or not....
(is that what you were asking?)
