Click the "Quick links" in the top bar. There is an "Active topics" link.

"Active topics" leads you to this link: search.php?search_id=active_topics
By default, it seems to display all matches that are less than 7 days old. If you want to extend that a little bit, you can abuse some query parameters from other queries, found under the "Search"; namely setting the "Limit results to previous" option and seeing what you get. You can quickly see that you get a parameter called st, which can be given a value that corresponds to days.
So adding something like &st=300 at the end will extend the interval of display from 7 days to 300 days, or approximately 10 months: search.php?search_id=active_topics&st=300
If that would be of any help to your cause, of course.

What I do, because automatic methods may fail and/or be not ideal or be confusing, is sometimes using manual methods (which are important too to take in mind). In this case, I log in (then I get a personal register of my reads by highlighted icons, etc.) and, then, I navigate the first page looking for dates as old as I wish, in example the last week (Sunday-Saturday). By this way I can take in mind any category beforehand and their order in forum tree because an unified list will mix all this.
In relation to tainn's answer, I just saw a control on bottom left of Active Topics, wich offers from 1 day to 1 year of period.
I guess each method is good at some point or objective.

2.6 will have laser sight!
