I used to use a terrible layout. This is my new layout:
Arrow keys: Move
X: Fire
C: Lock on
V: Drop flag
B: Binoculars

z: shoot
x: drop flag
space: jump
a: lock on/identify
q: fullscreen
w: text box
r: radar
arrow keys: move
p: pause
f: slow keyboard motion
b: binoculars
I do this so I can do everything I need to with my left hand. It may sound cramped but it's actually really easy. Also mac keyboards don't have the space bars where you have to use two hands so when I need to jump in an emergency I just slap the keyboard and I don't have to pay attention to where my hand goes.
Also because my radar is full size and chat box changes with it I constantly toggle chat on and off (I like to spam toggle to keep me busy ).

Hi.
Most of you seem to be using the heavy-customized mapping.
You might be keyboard players, that's why you change it.
I am a mouse player and use keyboard only when I want to go straight, for instance, when I would like to stretch the length of the Laser.
And I am actually using the default key mapping. Sometimes it is inconvienient for me but if I change it, I must be confused.
However I can keep my skill better with default key mapping, Is it funny, isn't it?

I use mouse, but have a changed control set. Tab, q, w works well for me.

Ha ha that makes you probably the only person who uses default in all of bz heartnet
The reason my layout is so heavily modified is I try to keep the same style in Diablo, Starcraft, Doom and all that so I don't get confused switching from game to game.

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
Toggle radar: F2
Toggle chat: F3
Shoot: q (and left mouse)
Fullscreen/window toggle: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F1 (cuz I seem to hit it accidentally)
Jump with typing set to off so I can use "Tab" for name completion.
Having it set up this way, I have easy access to the radar zooming, jump, radar/chat toggles and a second fire key (in addition to the mouse) without having to move my hand. I use the mouse (or on my laptop, the Trackpoint) for movement, shooting, locking on my laptop, and space for flag drops since my middle Trackpoint button acts as a scrolling toggle instead of a normal button. On my PC with a full mouse, I generally use the middle button for flag drops.

Oh right: I use scroll up for fire as well, it does wonders for spreads.

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
Now that I'm playing BZFlag again, and this time with a Playstation controller:
Movement: Left Analog Stick
Shoot: X and L1
Jump: O and R1
Scoreboard: L2
Binoculars: R2
Drop Flag: Square
Start/Identify: Triangle
Pause: Start
Selfdestruct: Select
I hate playing with keys and mouse.

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
I actually use a wacom tablet to play
when I migrated/upgraded from vista to linux I lost functionality of the four function keys on the tablet. so now I use a tablet keyboard hybrid.
shoot = tap
jump = lower pen button
binoc = upper pen button
drop flag = z
identify = x
when my tablet is not around I use keyboard
shoot = q
jump = tab
binoc = b
drop flag = space
identfy= w
I thought I was the only tablet player until I read netochka nezvanova's post.
note: Im not experimenting, these are the controls I have been using for half my bz life.

ok, i mostly use mouse but i have a well exaustve mod of mapping, most basic first:
and i have mouse box biiiger and noGUI mapped to ERe: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
I use joystick to. My main trigger fires. Then a small button to right of the trigger locks on. The button where my thumb is for jumps and the one next to is for binoculars.

Fire - Left Click
Lock on - Right Click
Then I like to have my other major keys lined up horizontally.
Jump - Period
Drop Flag - Comma
Chat to all - N

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
I love use the mouse, and I have my key control like this:
fire -> wheel down
look on -> right click
jump -> tab
restart -> middle mouse
The other key mapping aren't so important while playing, and so I don't post them.

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
I have used both mouse and keyboard...it really depends on what computer I'm using and what map I'm on...but here are my mappings
Keyboard
Shoot: O, I ,and U
Jump: K
lock-on: J
Spawn: J
drop flag: L
binoculars: B
toggle flags on field: t
toggle flags on radar: y
I'm left handed so I use WASD instead of arrowkeys
since I have shoot as O I have to type in /lagstats to get lagstats, but I find its not that hard
Mouse
Shoot: scroll down
jump: right button
lock-on: left button
spawn: left button
I've tried joy-sticks and PS remotes and I just don't have the control with those.

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
i just recently changed this and am having trouble getting used to it (i used default for 2 years+)
but I have designed this to minimize finger movement and to make my hand more comfortable
every now and then I still change one of the shoot buttons back to z

Shoot: E and R
Jump: W
Drop Flag: F
Identify/Lock On: I
Binoculars: B
Toggle Console: T
Toggle Radar: Q
These are the ones I use the most... My brother found this playing style very helpful at GU League maps and other strategized servers, and I have grown accustomed to it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone!!
I used to play with:
Shoot: Space
Jump: V
Drop Flag: F
The rest were the same...

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
idk if this will work for any of you, but i gave it a shot, and it was pretty good...
Fire Shot: Mouse wheel up & down (super rapid shots)
Jump: Left Click and Space
Identify: Right Click/I
Drop Flag: Middle Mouse
Move Forward: W
Reverse: S
Left: A
Right: D
Toggle Score: E and R
this was pretty cool, but i ended up unloading all my rounds at once. I got confused with the locations (they were so different), but its a great key mapping.
I will say im back to my old one.
