Bzflag internet usage

Post by the_j0k3r »

Before people start (hopefully they won't), I have spent time searching the forums on this, and did not come up with anything, all I can remember was a topic awhile ago about how much bandwidth servers take up on a host, and I'm not sure if that is relevant anyway.

To the question - Excluding the downloads of map files, textures, etc (that amounts to a fairly small amount, anyway), how much internet usage (downloads/uploads, megabyte wise), does bzflag take up, through actual game play?

Obviously there would be no "100mb" answer, but in terms of kb/s would it add up to a lot, if played a lot?

Thanks

Bandwidth consumption is dependent on the number of players and shots present on the server.

Inbound client bandwidth usage is equal to the outbound server bandwidth usage of a single player by definition. Of course it's only one player, so it's properly expressed in kb per second, not kb per player-second. Outbound client bandwidth usage is considerably less.

On typical servers it ends up being around 30-40 kbps.

Please notice that the bandwidth usage also depends on server variables like _updateThrottleRate and _angleTolerance .

I posted some graphs, of server usage.

Take a look at my Defender game mode concept.

Thinking is not an automatic process. A man can choose to think or to let his mind stagnate, or he can choose actively to turn against his intelligence, to evade his knowledge, to subvert his reason. If he refuses to think, he courts disaster: he cannot with impunity reject his means of perceiving reality.
