actions taken when st is around...

Post by Defman »

Sooooo,
Lets say you are on any team or even a rogue and you spot somebody who is either on another team or another rogue on radar nearby. You proceed to attack the target even though you have no clear line of sight to that target - you end up (in this example) jumping over a wall on your final approach for the kill and just out of corner of your eye (screen) you spot a stealthed tank that apparently your first target was being held up by.

What do you do?
1. wait and work together with your first target to elimnate the stealthed tank
2. just continue on with your main target since you are probably already lined up for the kill

I will usually choose number 2, for the sake of not loosing the momentum you might already be on.

Sure number 1 could happen, but that comes with knowing who your first target was, if they are somebody whom I do not "know well" (either a new person or callsign) I will not bother trying to work together because I have no clue of what your actions will be within the next few seconds. If my first target is a well known person - good player, etc, I might try to work together - but rarely.

I usually end up maybe 40 - 70 percent of the time being able to take out both (with luck on my side) the stealthed tank and my first target - though not in that order all the time....just to have my first target end up sending me pm's and complaining that I should have gone after the st or that they were going to "help" me take care of the st - then after that probably stab me in the back anyways and kill me.

Yes, I have been around still - under various callsigns but lately have been playing as Defman in happypenguin with the demiss of Turkey.

BTW
alot of people I have played with over the past year assumed I am hard of hearing because of my callsign.

It does stand for something else, and it does indicate how and why I play the way I do - can anybody guess what it stands for?

See ya around

Heh, sometimes I am like that also. Especially if there is a camper bothering everbody. Right As I'm about to take him out. POW, some one else hits me. Just a pet peeve of mine. Of course I'm guilty of doing the same to others so I let it slide.

Hey Defman,

Just my thoughts on your post. As for ST goes, it depends on whats going on. For example on Hashmark with so many GM campers, I will definitely leave another ST alone IF they are going after the GM's. However, a lot of ST's there dont do that...soooo.

Now on other servers I will always try to take ST's out first because I consider it a strong flag to have. I usually go for the person with the best flag out there....if they are doing well.

Depends on the situation, but if I know that the ST is there, I take out the other tank and try to anticipate the reaction of the ST. In most cases, it will immediately attack from behind.

Thats my approach, it works 50/50.
.........you kids, get out of my tank...........

i'm pretty ruthless myself, if the shot is good on the stealth, i'll try to take that stealth out first. then try to get that unstealthed target next if he is still around. even when other stealths are after a camper and i'll take them out if i can, i have this "you took too long!" reasoning for that.

i call it "stealth wars" because with people hangin out all sneaky and stuff, the moment you give yourself away by knocking off that original target, the stealth war will be on. and once you lose sight of that st you've lost a good chance.
some of you players are so good that i can not afford to not take you out, if i catch your turret sticking out of a pyramid or stalling someone, you know what i mean??

Hmm... It all depends on my geometry... If the ST would end up behind me, i would not go for #1. If there would be any chance that i could kill one, then maybe rico or turn & shoot, i may try to get both (in any particular order). If i can't have my cake and eat it, i'll try to kill the one i'm already locked on to and run from the stealth until i can get a better position...

as for DEFMAN... Maybe:
http://www.defman.org/homepage.htm Though i don't think you spend too much time in Hollywood.... Maybe you do, i donno...

or....:
DEFMAN, a non-profit organization that provides direct relief to cancer victims and their families with money for mortgages, bills, and airfare for family members.

or:

Maybe you have lost your hearing ;)

When gm's are around, by all means...even give an st an escort to the gm campers.

on that server there are no gm's - but I guess really what I am looking at is when all of a sudden an st appears near by and you have seconds, no less than that - to come up with a solution to save yourself and you may as well take out somebody if you are about to lose a point yourself if you don't succeed.

As to my nick, I used to play Tribes2 alot before and shortly there after getting into Linux (was a learning experience in itself trying to get a decent 3d type game going in Linux) and the "strengths" I found I had in that game was I was able to defend our base better than going out and taking an offensive role - thus the name Defman.

When I found Bzflag within the menu of Mandrake 8.0 IRC, I just carried that nick with - and thus I will do what ever I can to defend myself (Dr. Death may disagree with me here LMAO) and use each map to the best of my ability.

If I knew who "Tea" (one player whom had a legitimate gripe the other night) was, there would have been a very good chance I would have worked together to take care of an st - especially the one that was gathering kills that night.

Thanks agian for all the funny remarks - made my day!
Though I thought for sure somebody would guess it...hehe

See ya on the battlefield

On the topic of handles:

I was an active member of the Quake Clan: the clanberries

Hence the fruity nickname. Everyone in the clan had "berry" in the name. They're still around too: http://www.clanberries.com[/url]

Yeah, I had joined a clan back then in T2 - but found it next to impossible to actually play with anybody in it because no one could be online at the same time. Plus, I don't have the time like some ppl do to belong to a tribe or clan. Gotta family to raise, work, play R & R etc...LOL

I just found it hard to set aside time on a regular basis to be present for practices.

If I could manage it though, I wouldn't mind checking out a CTF "clan" (right term here?) but first would need to get more practice in. Been playing on teams (not rogue) recently in FFA and find it a blast when players can work together to accomplish something.

You should come on over to ducati sometime and play Defman...of course you should probably remove the tab key from your keyboard first. You will get use to the no jump game pretty quickly I'm sure.....and I bet it will make your FFA game better as well!!

lol, popped into ducati earlier tonight to see how it was going - as an observer though.

Since for some reason I recieve alot complants about my lag - which I don't understand because even on happypenguin which is apparently somewhere in Europe (at least not in the U.S.) my lag is about average 124 to maybe 180 or so - I try to find a good server #1 and hopefully it is state side #2.

I have not been to ducati much because lag just about makes my gameplay unbearable...I have even pondered opening up ports to see if that would help but didn't dare since I found no mention - so far - that by doing it wouldn help.

Will stop by more often though. Gotta admit, I have almost broken my keyboard because that blasted tab key! Seems to throw me off 70% of the time when I would be expecting to jump - and cannot!
