Re: The 12 Games of BzFlag

6. BzFlag is a game written in C. The object is to modify the code with as many clever patches as you can, thus demonstrating your superior coding skills. I wonder why they have so much fun doing this? If you want to impress fellow coders, go hack a compiled on-line game and show off your skills th...

by virtue of the fact that the passwords are stored on the server side and not the meta-server (list server), they can never be trusted. if you run a hash algorithm and send it to the server, the operator just sends that hashed value when they want to log in as you. if you encrypt it on the server s...

that sounds a little similar to the "king of the hill" game style in 1.8 (and soon to be in the main codebase, after g2). The highest scoring player is white, everyone else is black (en-teamed together)

I doubt it was cell, or even anyone associated with bzflag. Warez kiddies spend a lot of their time scanning for open ftp servers to dump on, so its probably just a coincidence that they happened to be german.

Server operators (crosspost)

Please don't get angry at me for advertising here as well, but I feel its important enough to justify maximum exposure.

Server operators PLEASE look at my post in the servers: general discussion forum. There has been a denial-of-service exploit released into the wild which is fixed in current CVS.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!! -- SERVER OPERATORS PLEASE READ

bzfs version 1.7g0 and below are vulnerable to a denial of service attack. An exploit for this has been written and released into the wild by a helpful fellow who goes by the name of "russian code molester." Current CVS is not vulnerable to this bug, so please upgrade! This denail-of-servi...

The issue is that OSS is traditionally an exclusive device (meaning only one program can have the sound card at once). Recent SB cards that use the emu10k1 driver are great for this, because the driver provides hardware mixing. Another thing you might try is switching to ALSA, which can often do mix...

I think I may have resolved this on IRC, but for anyone else: The redhat gtkglarea rpms seem a little faulty - they're missing the pkgconfig script that goes along with it. The best way to do this is to download gtkglarea-1.99 from GNOME ftp and compile+install it. Everything should work just peachy...

Several people have mentioned techniques for creating the same effect as the bugs had. Its not a question of being clean, its a question of being correct. The pyramid collision code was just wrong. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I have considered it a bug for a long time, and while it feels weird t...

There's a reason the source code should be released with any binary: BZFLAG IS GPL. This means that any modifications MUST be made public. If you want to have a modified game, do something like what patlabor did with zero. A lot of the open-source philosophy seems a little overly-hippy to me, but on...

However, not all the developers look here. Its true that this forum has had more success in that area, but the SF bugs page is still the best way to get Riker's attention.

Just a question, but how are they different? g0 added the capability to switch the look a little at opacity=100% (which also turns on a lot of rendering optimizations needed for software-rendering), but the transparent HUD should be the same.

You could still use * within your code if you make it a requirement to pass \* to bzfs. The issue is that the shell is globbing the * and turning it into a list of files. \* prevents this.
