Re: Forum upgrade to phpBB3

I prefer it on the left- user info is right there as you begin reading the post. I don't know anything about phpBB templates (I'm a vBulletin guy) so I don't know how hard it is to change the layout around.

Re: Dockable windows

I've actually done this before, but instead of changing anything in the client, I configured my displays to be a vertical span. Then, I increased the radar/panel size until it filled the lower screen. That effectively gave me radar/chat on one display and window view on the other. There's a thread a...

Preventing spawnkilling is more a matter of map design, not rules. If castle warfare is designed in a way that makes spawn-killing easy, perhaps your brother should play elsewhere.

Or, instead of differentiating between the "main" and "play" maps, just use two play areas. Once the match is finished, restart it again in the other area (since everyone is already there). It would be less intrusive- all you'd need is a flag reset, instead of killing everyone. P...

They both should die, but lag generally prevents that. Usually the tank that dies is the one approaching the other tank, and if there is a head-on collision, the slower one usually lives (as ts said).

I've run BZFS on a 500MHz Celeron box with 64MB of RAM under Windows 98... no problem. Network utilization is always the issue. Also, running several servers is not an issue unless many are populated at the same time. having 16 players on one server takes a lot more bandwidth than 1 player each on 1...

To be honest, I don't think it's really worth using a plug-in to expose a function like this when it's so trivial to just code up the specific combos you need. That is just my personal opinion, though. After all, to some server ops, making a trivial plugin is... non-trivial. :p Things are going to g...

There are a couple of different approaches... There would probably have to be a new BZDB variable, so that the radar limit could still be controlled when using the flag. In fact, the flag could just be called "Radar Upgrade" or something similar, and used to give an improved radar range ev...

"AssCannon" could be a fun bad flag, but I don't know how I feel about having a flag that does front and rear at the same time... AFAIK, there are no flags that shoot two bullets at once.

Solving the TK problem would be relatively simple. Either turn off friendly fire, or impose a stiff penalty (more than you'd get from the cap) for teamkilling someone who's holding a flag.

Personally I think most CTF games would benefit from a lack of friendly fire...

I thought there was a technical reason you can't change players scores? I heard on the client side, score is calculated based on MsgKilled and such, not the MsgScore that everyone else is updated with. Anyways, good idea. in 2.0, yes, the client calculates its own score, so messing with it causes s...

I'd been contemplating doing a map with a similar mechanic - two teams and only one flag that doesn't belong to either. Best solution I could think of was to put the two teams flags' spawn locations in places that couldn't be accessed at all. Then create a third team, limit the third team to only o...

I would highly recommend skimming over relevant pages in the BZFlag Wiki to see what you're getting into- not to do all the work yourself, but just to get a general idea of what's involved. To be honest, I think it would be a better idea to stick to mapping, and allow your hired help to take care of...

Controllable replay speed is kind of tricky. A replay is basically a recording of the net messages that the server receives from players. In order to speed up play and keep everything synced, a bunch of speed and time variables would have to be modified, and clients sometimes don't react well when c...

I think that instead of adding a field to the scoreboard for CTF, the scoring rules for players could just be altered for CTF games in such a way that a player's score is mostly dependent on their contribution to the team... i.e. flag defense, grabbing opponents' flags, and capping. Kills and deaths...

It basically seems like "Team rabbit" with one rabbit per team. should be doable with a plugin in 3.0.

Too complex. Chances are, if you need to put hard shot limits or kill limits on a flag, it is too powerful.

Optic, for some reason it was a lot more prone to double-counting kills and other issues, iirc.

Presently, plugins can't change player scores, so this idea isn't really doable until 3.0 is released.

Of course, you could always drop the flag before you get hit. ;-) Possibly setting _maxFlagGrabs to 1 on a server will make it even more risky for the holder (if you drop the flag before you die, you lose it). Easier said than done... you're still in danger for a full second after you drop a genoci...

Fun with Genocide

I've thrown together a few plug-ins dealing with that oh-so-fun flag, Genocide. Enjoy. Note that running more than one of these on a server at once may not work properly. I've got two or three more in the works, but they require a tweak to the API which I haven't made yet. General info from the resp...
