Re: IRC meeting to discuss BZFlag Replacement Project
Throwing out working code in favour of building something brand new is quite often the wrong decision to make in software/system engineering. Consider this article from Joel on Software: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html . Yes I know its an old article - but it discusses prin...

Re: the position of the legue
I'm not so sure bzf needs "saving". Some people play card games online (like Solitaire), where there are leagues they can join and play matches in  . Why would someone want to? Mostly the community and shared fun I suspect - not because the game demonstrates the latest openGL wizz-b...

Re: IRC meeting to discuss BZFlag Replacement Project
I'm sure there are quite a number of people who really do care about BZFlag - the leagues are full of people who are passionate about this game. While I agree that we need to try something to give the project an injection of energy, and to encourage the devs to continue, I don't think a completely n...

Re: IRC meeting to discuss BZFlag Replacement Project
Ok, so not a lot of discussion went on then. Well, I have some questions - if anyone would care to comment. 1. I've heard that the version 2.0.x code-base is "dead" - ie not being maintained. However, I can't find any posts which detail specifically what is wrong with this code. There is t...

Re: IRC meeting to discuss BZFlag Replacement Project
I wish this was announced further ahead of time, and was better attended, since I believe there is still much development talent in this project and such an effort could do well. I hope these talks continue... Likewise -- could someone who attended possibly write up a summary and post it here for t...

Re: 2.0.16 compile (Make) error
Yup - looks like there's an issue with passing --disable-robots to configure. Compiled fine without it.

Re: 2.0.16 compile (Make) error
Where is this header file (global.h) supposed to be? It's supposed to be in the "include" directory. Ok thanks, I was only looking inside the /src directory. global.h is as expected, but config.h is not. searching inside config.h has this: /* Enabling Robots */ /* #undef ROBOT */ and conf...

Re: "Server lag"
The only recent change has been a change in IP address for the server, and a resulting change in the DNS record. But that was a couple of days ago so all upstream DNS servers should have the new iP by now. I'm pleased to say that my servers are back to their usual stability. Although my hosting pro...

2.0.16 compile (Make) error
Howdy, Just downloaded current source from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bzflag/files/ Configures ok, but make stops with this error: g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../include -I../../include -DINSTALL_LIB_DIR=\"/usr/local/lib/bzflag/\" -DINSTALL_DATA_DIR=\"/usr/local/share/bzflag\&qu...

Re: "Server lag"
@const - no I haven't experienced this sort of issue on any of the servers I play on. @BC - seems irregular, sometimes every few minutes, other times 30 - 60 mins or more. See below. grep -A 1 63.246.136.16 guhixofi.log Player [0] accept() from 63.246.136.16:53213 on 6 Player [0] removed at 2010-11-...

Re: "Server lag"
The weird thing is that it does this even mid-game, when there are five or six players on. All of a sudden players cant join because they cant authenticate. Can you tell me the details of how the list server connects (special port or something?) - I'd like to pass that onto my hosting provider. Thanks

Re: "Server lag"
Ok thanks Blast, I updated the server to 2.0.16 to see if that made any difference - which it didn't. I've had a couple of lag spikes. Keeping the 3d effects at a medium level does give me between 120 - 190 fps without affecting my jitter to much (but its difficult to tell). Tracing from my pc to my...

Re: "Server lag"
I'm getting some crazy results here. bzfi0030.png I turned off all the 3d display settings and effects (as you can see in the attached), but it really didn't have much effect. Here is a few lines of pings to the server from my pc, while bzflag is running (just after taking the screenshot above) 64 b...

Re: GU League Player Poll - 20 min matches
3: because choice is always good.
But why 20 minutes? I'd prefer 15.
If needs be, have two scoreboards, one for "full length" matches and another for "shorts".

"Server lag"
I'm trying to figure out a lag issue on my server. When connected to my server, in game lag for me is anywhere from 150 - 400 ms. When I ping the server from my pc, response times are around 11-20 ms. When I ssh into the server and check what processes are running (eg top) the server is mostly idle ...

Re: BZFS unstable on Ubuntu server
Thanks for your feedback. I'm fairly confident its not the server (VPS), because I've had the hosting company look into this too. They have confirmed that during the time players are getting very high lag warns the server is not under any stress: Low CPU time, little disk I/O, limited network traffi...

BZFS unstable on Ubuntu server
Howdy, I've compiled BZFS (2.0.13) on an Ubuntu server (Linux VPS). At certain times all players start getting lag warnings because their lag is showing as very high - often over 1000ms and/or they go NR. However, when this happens, those same players can ping the server from a command prompt, and g...

enuffsaid.co.nz offi server moved to new hardware
Howdy all, I've had a bit of trouble with lag & jit spikes on my server, so I've moved to a new hosting provider. New url is bzflag.enuffsaid.co.nz, port is 5158. Set up identically to previous (and other) offi GU servers of course. The replay server isnt showing in the list, but its there, on p...

Re: Compiling from SVN - cant enable sharing
Well thats just weird. Now its working fine - but I didn't do anything.
There was some message after make had completed about something being done in the background tho - so maybe I was just being a bit impatient..
Thanks anyway.
