It will certainly cause bandwidth issues for players already experiencing problems, and cause slow computers to be slower. Only if those users with slow connections/PC's are dumb enough to use it. That's kind of like connecting to a huge map with dialup, 2meg card, and setting your client to the hi...

What I'M saying is that it would be optional, meaning tha YOU don't have to listen to the chat or use it. So it would be the same as what you play now. So how would that make anyone less able to play? WHy would you have to quit playing when it would be just like now? Is that ok with YOU!?!?!?!?! I ...

On a private LAN running normally, bzflag runs okay on 10Mbps lans with less than 30ms lag. If you have higher, it could be for any of several reaons: 1. network problems (wiring, hubs, switches, routers, etc.) 2. busy clients 3. busy network (other things going on can eat some of the bandwidth) 4. ...

BattleZone was popular in the late 80's in video arcades. If I remember correctly, which I may not, it ran on Atari game machines. It was single-player, no network, but typically had you pitted against 2 tanks at a time. Each round started with you playing against one or two regular tanks. Once you ...

And even earlier, in 1990-1993, SGI shipped a demo game called Arena. It had robots that looked vaguely humanoid that you drove in 1st person. The world had a map, similar to bzflag. The map file included a box object that you could jump on, and a central building made from a collection of boxes. Th...

Re: Wings, Useless

And I like Useless. Sometimes I want to drive around and explore a map, and accidentally pick up an OO on top of a building, and plummet down. Or hit a Shockwave flag when trying to shoot someone. If I've got Useless, it means I *won't* accidentally get another flag, and that is of some value. Not ...

Toaster: As far as I know, the primary intention was to give GM a chink in its armor, so to speak. Fixing (or working around, if you prefer) the gm suicide bug was a secondary goal and pleasant side effect. Of course, I might be totally wrong, but that was my impression. Or totally right. :) I just...

Was this created as a fix to the old death-by-gm-suicide bug for when you were moving forward and fired gm and died because it exploded in the pipe, so to speak? If so, that bug, as I recall, is due to gm having a fixed velocity regardless of tank momentum. Perhaps time to adjust the code to fire it...

Well said. Still a great game. On a supportive side note, I have been looking at the posts since 2.0 was released. I didn't bother to try to actually count these, but I would guess that perhaps as much as 30% of the forum posts are bugs/issues with servers and clients as people try to sift through t...

Well spoken, Trepan. Nice brainstorm, too. I like that tutorial. I think it would help a lot of people. And perhaps help some to become good modelers. Perhaps a sticky under "map making" with a list of such tutorials would be helpful. As more are discovered, they can be added to the sticky...

That's part of the reason I could see building the editor on the client code base. You need the general capabilities of bzedit, some of which have minor bugs but probably easily fixed. (Such as flipz z problem, deleted objects in the object list, and retention of some attributes.) Using the common r...

I am not particularly keen on being confrontational. I certainly won't shy away from it, though, and I have a tendency to defend anyone that appears to be getting heavyhanded treatment. Made me very popular as a military officer, always took care of all my personnel, and as a result they always took...

That's pretty much the case with every flag, I think. Tiny is a very powerful flag to the right player. On viper.pimpi.org, Manu once ran up a score of 75:0 with Tiny. Strong flag, good player, hard to beat. Each flag has strengths. You're absolutely correct, world design and flag management go hand...

JeffM/PatLabor, I have yet to ask you to write an editor. Don't know why you insist on thinking that way, message after message. On the learning thing, it's not that we want everyone to fend for themselves, it's just that it's VERY disheartening when it dosn't seem like anyone wants to even try to learn something, I mean it's not THAT hard, we did it, and we arn't some race of uber magical people. Yes, and it's most annoying if you're observer. For instance, if you're riding with a tank and there is a tele on the ground, but the player is on a platform 1000 feet above the tele, you still as observer see a yellow screen, as if you were at ground level. At least, in 1.7 through 1.10.8.

I agree with Gerbil's perspective. I can program just fine. Doesn't mean I should have to learn something incredibly complex to take advantage of a few features. Example: Trepan built some really, really nice features into bzmapper. I used almost all of them and focused on a specific few that met my...
