Re: No sound on Windows 10
I found a temporary workaround. If you start the game windowed (using the windowed shortcut in the start menu, for instance) then the sound works. You can then switch it to fullscreen with the F1 key. +1 on the problem, for me... Generic audio setup on Win10 v1803. -1 for me on the workaround, star...

Re: Possibility of BZFlag on a console
And it's worth noting... Most of us remember the golden days 10-12 years ago when at any given month there were probably a couple of thousand players who played at least at some point over a given month. Fast forward to 2018... As I type this post, there are exactly 6 people playing BZ. Out of 7.5 b...

Re: possible jumping related bug
frame rates that high can cause issues. You don't need over 120 fps. So yes, limit your frame rate to something reasonable. It's cheating when you limit it down to below like 30, because that lets you introduce fake lag. Hey, can someone help me understand from a technical standpoint how my GPU fra...

Re: Why are there only like 30 people playing BZFLAG at one
I certainly appreciate your comments, Jeff, and always have. I thought geno had come along a few years after the port. I can't find the reference now, but I remember in the early to mid 2000's reading an article/blog talking about the "laws" of BZ. (I have a freakily detailed, asperger-enh...

Re: Why are there only like 30 people playing BZFLAG at one
I remember the days, 7-8 years ago, when on any given day there were 15+ servers with players on them, and often there were a total of 200+ playing on them. Over the years there has been a lot of talk about why we are dying. Some erroneously blame the developers, or the admins, or the nature of open...

Re: Resurrecting BZFlag
That sounds more like marketing babble then anything real ;) Actually this is the world I live in every day. I actually did mean maps because I see maps and games as a single entity. But you are correct, there'd be no reason that two games wouldn't be playing the same map. My thinking is that when ...

Re: Resurrecting BZFlag
I'm imagining a true elastic environment where the listserv is in essence a "hypervisor" that dynamically powers up Amazon EC2 (elastic) server instances in response to the number of maps that are actually being played.

Re: The Ideal Map
I liked certain map "styles"... Lasermania is a perfect example of a map that involves a lot of thinking, planning, spatial awareness... You really need to have a feel for how your team, and your opponent's team, are laid outon the map. The action develops slowly and it is sort of a thinki...

Re: Resurrecting BZFlag
Personalty I'd make a game that had an "Official servers" tab and an optional "community servers" tab that people could unlock to run on other hosts for whatever reason. I'd also build league services into the game and make it so that map instances could be reserved for league p...

Re: Resurrecting BZFlag
... You are basically talking about changing how server hosting works, instead of wanting to host your own game, you donate your server to be used by the BZFLag Game Hosting Staff and you don't get to say how it is run. On further reflection, here's another thought that is a potential game-changer....

Well, it will not be without controversy, that's for sure... But as you and I have discussed, clinging to the "saftey" of the status quo no longer serves any useful purpose. Thanks!

Resurrecting BZFlag
This was my response to the other thread, that has been moved here, just so you understand the context in which it is offerd. Re: Looking for the best mouse for BZflag
With the exception of having my own key mappings loaded, there is nothing that affects the quality of my play more than the mouse I am using. I play with an old wired Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3. At work at at my home office I use the HP wireless mouse that came with each of my laptop docking ...

Re: What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping
It depends a lot on your style of play. My recommendation for most mouse players is, get a mouse that has several buttons on it (I still use the MS optical explorer for BZ) and assign your most neded buttins to the mouse. For my style of play, radar zooming and binos are mission-critical so most of ...

I remember the Army tank crewman manual said something that was so simple that it seemed comical: 1. Avoid being seen. 2. If seen, avoid being hit. 3. If hit, avoid being killed. That sounds almost silly at first, but think about it. As it applies to BZ: 1. First and foremost, try to avoid your enem...

I agree with what others have said. The nature of online games provides anonymity. If you've been around online communities much, then you know that some will use that anonymity as a way to be very open and honest, with no fear of reprisal. But, many will also use it to put on a persona that isn't r...
